Innovation by design literacy

Organisations don’t lack ideas – they lack design literacy: The ability to understand and shape the material conditions of change.

Ruth Neubauer
Design literacy practitioner

My name is Ruth. I have a PhD in Design Innovation and first-hand experience in the UK digital tech industry. I help innovation leaders develop design literacy.

I have worked in large-scale digital transformation, including the UK smart meter transition, civic tech for government, and high-performance search and data systems.

I teach at New Design University and Loughborough University London. My research focuses on design agency, the capacity to act within uncertain and dynamic contexts.

Everyone has design literacy

Design skills are often associated with years of studio practice: learning to read the world, reframe problems, and give form to solutions. But design ability is not limited to designers. We all use it in everyday situations, when we improvise a recipe, organise information, or shape how something works in practice. What is often missing is not the ability, but the awareness and training.

I work with people to recognise and sharpen these abilities, through methods and tools that make them more deliberate, transferable and effective. At first, these methods may feel structured or unfamiliar. Over time, they become a literacy, enabling more fluid, confident action in complex situations.
